BBC2 documentary strand Storyville is to move to new high-brow digital channel BBC4 and become a weekly feature of the service.

Storyville editor Nick Fraser is at the MipTV programming market in Cannes this week looking for foreign material to fill the extra slots.

From next year, the number of Storyville slots will go up from around 10 documentaries shown annually on BBC2 to 52, some on the same channel but most on BBC4, according to Mr Fraser.

Storyville has showcased some of the best international documentaries around in recent years, including last year's documentary Oscar winner One Day in September.

"I always wanted to have enough space to show a huge variety of the best non-fiction programming," said Mr Fraser.

"I've been looking through the archives for some golden oldies, but there will also be a lot of new stuff, including co-productions and pre-purchased documentaries from overseas."
