Cath Clarke: Rousing South African retelling of the life of Jesus

Hugo Chavez called him a great socialist; in this rousing South African retelling of his life, Jesus is more local political activist. Set in a modern fictional African country, this is the second film in the Xhosa language by British director Mark Dornford-May and the Dimpho Di Kopane theatre group. The documentary vigour jolts us into new responses to a story so often retold. Jesus travels the townships with his disciples preaching democracy and tolerance to rapturous crowds. They're all watched over by a glowering Satan and Gabriel. It's most powerful as we watch the Massacre of the Innocents by a militia group armed with machetes; it could as easily be footage from Rwanda or Darfur.
