The Other Boleyn Girl

Philip French: The Other Boleyn Girl is a bloody mess

The Other Boleyn Girl (114 mins, 12A)
Directed by Justin Chadwick ; starring Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Eric Bana, Kristin Scott Thomas, David Morrissey

A lot of carbon footprints could be saved if Rachel Weisz, Emily Watson and Samantha Morton spent less time flying west across the Atlantic polishing their American accents and Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson hadn't flown the other way, practising their English dialects to play Henry VIII's second queen and her lesser-known sister in The Other Boleyn Girl.

With characteristically splendid costumes by Sandy Powell and an uncharacteristically dull script by Peter Morgan, this is a less than intriguing tale of royal intrigue involving the Boleyn family in league with the Duke of Norfolk, the Holbeinesque David Morrissey. Their aim is to advance themselves at court, first by getting domesticated Mary Boleyn into bed with lecherous Henry (Eric Bana) and bearing him a child and then having feisty Anne become his queen. I couldn't wait until the executioner swung his sword (Anne's chosen implement of quietus-making) and we could say goodbye to Boleyn.
