The style stars of summer – in pictures

From footballers to film stars and fictional detectives, we unveil this season's key fashion leaders. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

Summer style stars: 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon', New York, America - 13 Jun 2012
Maggie Gyllenhaal

We’ve always had a soft spot for MG, but it’s her post-partum look that has earned her maximum respect. There are those celebrities who take the Hervé-Leger-body-con-three-weeks-after-the-birth approach, and then there are the stars who go the laidback route. No prizes for guessing which looks more chic. Beyoncé held the mantle for a while, but Gyllenhaal’s promotional tour for Hysteria proves that she’s in charge of the breezy-new-mom look.

Summer style stars: Sienna Miller
Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren

Finally a 1960s on-screen wardrobe to steal the limelight from the Mad Men women. Miller's role in the upcoming film The Girl, which looks at the relationship between The Birds actor and director Alfred Hitchcock, promises much on the sartorial front. We will see Miller resplendent in minimal wool shift dresses and classic courts. If your fashion dial errs to the classic, tune into her Tippi rather than Duchess Kate’s look.

Summer style stars: Andy Carroll
Andy Carroll

His ponytail has proved divisive, even in this parish, but there’s something about Andy Carroll that smacks of the early 90s in a way that chimes perfectly with fashion right now. With a look that can only be described as martial arts warrior meets early 90s raver, he’s the fashion love-child of Rick Owens and Topman. And that’s before we have even got started on those Chanel-worthy eyebrows.

Summer style stars: Claire Danes
Claire Danes

The perfect example of the power of TV on style collective conscience. Pre Homeland, Claire Danes was pretty, but a bit meh on the red carpet. But after her stint playing a bipolar CIA agent – albeit a not especially stylish one – Danes has her fashion mojo back. Her best look? An easy, un-slavish approach to looking glamorous, as seen at the Met Ball in New York recently. Summer wedding attendees should watch and learn.

Summer style stars: LIndsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan as Liz Taylor

There’s a second biopic look piquing our interest this summer, courtesy of sneak pictures from the Liz & Dick film set. Usually we only get to assess Lindsay Lohan’s style in the courtroom and, admittedly, her summer 2012 look is not strictly her own. But from what we’ve seen so far, the high-waisted pastel jeans, leopard-print swimsuit and TOWIE eyelashes she has donned to play Liz Taylor are working for us. Check out Zara, M&S and, er, Boots respectively if you fancy something similar.

Magnum PI

Who would have predicted this one? Tom Selleck’s garish private investigator is pivotal to this summer’s style. In terms of menswear, the Hawaiian-print shirt has taken hold of the catwalk and the high street. At London Collections: Men last weekend, Magnum was the inspiration for Agi & Sam’s show, and Marks & Spencer reports that Hawaiian shirts are currently doing brisk business. Magnum is massive for women too. Stella McCartney loves a hibiscus print, while Coleen Rooney has taken a pair of tropical shorts to Poland.

Summer style stars: Yayoi Kusama
Yayoi Kusama

The 82-year-old Japanese artist is the current toast of all things fashion, thanks to a high-end collaboration with Louis Vuitton, who sponsored her recent show at the Tate Modern. When the collection goes on sale next month, the dotty clothes and accessories are expected to be an instant sellout. And the dot action won’t stop there. The highlight of the Céline resort collection that was unveiled last week? A spotted monochrome sporty two-piece.

Summer style stars: Stella McCartney Spring 2012 Presentation Dinner
Anne Hathaway

There’s a tonsorial micro-trend rippling in Hollywood. For want of a snappy name, we’re calling it actors-who-cut-their-hair-for-a-role look. Charlize Theron is a contender, but Anne Hathaway, with her locks cropped for Les Misérables, is currently leading the discipline. Mainly because she turned up at the Stella McCartney resort presentation looking like a gamine circus boy. The take-home styling note for the summer 2012 crop is that angular Ray Ban shades work best with short hair.

Summer style stars: Roberto Martinez
Roberto Martinez

Current leader of Euro 2012 pundit chic. Admittedly the field is small, but in terms of impact, these denziens of the commentary box have massive reach when it comes to imbuing the collective male conscience with what is acceptable in fashion. Roberto Martinez is pushing a contrast-collar shirt, which is rather nice in a minimal Raf-Simons-meets-Cos way. Jamie Carragher has dipped his toe into the look too, but Martinez is the one in charge here.

Fan Bingbing

Step aside Anna dello Russo, because at any given fashion show there is one name that is now guaranteed to whip up a hurricane of flashbulbs: Fan Bingbing, the mega-famous Asian actor who is currently at number three in the Forbes China celebrity list. Last year she made an estimated 100.9m yuan (£10m). And judging by her most recent red-carpet pics, she spent a good portion of that on refining her couture-meets-Princess-Leia remix look.
