Readers suggest the 10 best … tattoos

Last week we bought you our 10 best tattoos. Here we present your thoughts on the ones that got away

The Scissor Sisters singer has a lot of advice about tattoos. “Never get a cartoon character, never just pick one off the wall of the parlour and never get someone's initials because that relationship will end.” Her bionic arm tattoo breaks none of these rules and she's not concerned about it ageing either. “Hopefully by the time I'm 80 I can whack my arm off and have a real bionic one instead.” At least she won't have a scar

Readers' 10: Trevor Phillips Grand theft auto
Trevor Philips
As recommended by jalfreziboy
When jalfreziboy says that the Grand Theft Auto character's tattoo 'Fuck Police' is “the best tattoo I ever had done” we can't work out if he's being serious. Not just because of the fictional character in question's violent tendencies, but also because the tattoo actually reads 'Cops' not 'Police'. If it transpires that Jalfreziboy has indeed had this error permanently inked on to his abdomen, we hope it's not a mistake that keeps him up at night

Readers' 10: Sonny Bill Williams
Sonny Bill Williams
As recommended by davidder
As a world-class rugby player and New Zealand heavyweight boxing champion, it's not surprising that Williams's Samoan tribal tattoo has, according to Davidder who suggested it, “spawned many replicas”. Although Williams was born in New Zealand, his father is Samoan. He also has a tattoo on his calf. Whether he goes the whole hog and gets a pe'a, the traditional male tattoo of Samoa that covers the body from the knees to the rib cage, remains to be seen

Readers' 10: MEMENTO
Leonard Shelby
As recommended by bkkmei
Bkkmei makes a good point when they suggest Leonard Shelby's tattoos from the 2000 film, Memento. As with Wentworth Miller's character in Prison Break, suggested last week, Leonard, played by Guy Pearce, inks important things on to his body for future reference. Rather than helping him escape incarceration, however, he uses the images to combat his short-term memory loss and discover who murdered his wife. As Bkkmei says: “A real practical use for a tattoo!”

Tattoo: Robbie Williams
Robbie Williams
As recommended by Andrew Janicki and Goughwhitlam
Andrew Janicki and Goughwhitlam think Robbie Williams has a lot to answer for when it comes to garish celebrity tattoos. They may be right. Williams, who has more than 20 tatts, including the coat of arms of his hometown, Stoke-on-Trent, has some younger admirers. One Direction's Harry Styles, for one, has taken Williams's lead, with matching swallows on his front. Could this womanising, cheeky chappy from the Midlands be a Robbie in the making? All he needs to do now is to forge a solo career from the biggest boy band in the world…

Readers' 10: Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson
As recommended by antiFootball
As if a former heavyweight boxing world champion, infamous for biting Evander Holyfield's ear in the ring, could look any harder. Well, Mike Tyson managed it by getting a tribal face tattoo. But the boxer revealed that looking hard wasn't the his first intention. He initially asked for hearts “because I'm lovable”. When the tattooist refused because it didn't represent Tyson properly, he agreed to the tribal tatt instead

With a demon tattoo on the back of his head and “God hates us all” inked on his arm, it's not surprising that the guitarist from heavy metal band Slayer would want to mark the passing of 6 June 2006 – 6/6/06. How did he celebrate the momentous day? By getting another tattoo of course. “It was the day The Omen came out, and it comes around once every hundred years; I thought it was pretty cool.” His wife felt the same and they both have matching 666s

Readers' 10: red Dragon
Francis Dolarhyde
As recommended by chemicalviking
Tattoos are a successful theme in psychological thrillers, as authors Stieg Larsson and Thomas Harris have proved. Harris, creator of Hannibal Lecter, called his first novel Red Dragon after the body art on the back of the book's mass murderer Francis Dolarhyde. Played by Ralph Fiennes (with radically different body artwork) in the 2002 film of the same name, Dolarhyde takes tips from his idol Hannibal on how to kill entire families. Still, nice tattoo

Readers' 10: Dave Gahan
Dave Gahan
As recommended by AShortFuse
After the release of Depeche Mode's eighth album, Songs of Faith and Devotion, in 1993, frontman Dave Gahan went through a transformation. He got long hair, a hardcore drug addiction and an impressive number of tattoos, some so large they took 24 hours to complete. Speaking of that time he admits he became somewhat of a rockstar parody but AShortFuse thinks his tattoos are “the best”. One of his extensive collection includes the Buddhist chant "Om”. No sign of his Own Personal Jesus, though

Readers' 10: One Direction in concert
Zayn Malik
As recommended by SandyWell
This member of One Direction has totted up more tattoos than he has done Number 1s in 2013. The most recent additions include a gun on his stomach, a microphone on his forearm, a lion on his left leg and a caricature of his fiancée, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards, on his upper arm. SandyWell asks a good question of the 20-year-old, “What was he 'inking'?" Maybe he thought it's What Makes You Beautiful
