That Awkward Moment – review

Miles Teller's turn as the wisecracking Daniel is the highlight of a light-hearted love caper long on rom but low on com , writes Peter Bradshaw

At this very moment, dozens of writers are preparing to pitch a sexy HBO TV show called Boys. This sporadically successful movie proves that a relationship comedy from the male viewpoint isn't easy. The film only really relaxes in the outtake bloopers over the closing credits – bloopers that disclose how carefully controlled and policed everything in the preceding drama has been. Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B Jordan (from the forthcoming Fruitvale Station) play Jason, Daniel and Mikey, three single amigos in New York who swear to stay loyal to their buddy friendship and only date women casually. Secretly though, each is falling in love: Jason with aspiring author Ellie (Imogen Poots), Miles with musician Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis) and Mikey with his own wife, Vera (Jessica Lucas), from whom he had been separated. So they're monogamously unfaithful to their friends, and also to the women, having concealed from them this "bro" oath. There are a few nice moments, mainly connected with wisecracking Daniel; for me, Teller – who is the same in the outtakes as in the actual film – is the only guy in the cast with a plausible knack for comedy. The other two mostly look decorative. In the main, it's the usual story – much more rom than com.
