With its retro hairstyles, unhappy marriages, double-crossing criminals and dark caper narrative, this solidly unsatisfying adaption of Elmore Leonard's The Switch looks like a low-rent cross between American Hustle (with Isla Fisher standing in for Amy Adams; Jennifer Aniston for Jennifer Lawrence) and Ruthless People (in which Bette Midler was kidnapped, only to discover that her husband didn't want her back). Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) and John Hawkes are the inept ransomers trying to extort a fortune out of slimy Tim Robbins, to a backdrop of arcane funky pop. The meagre charms of the first act are soon squandered as this descends into straight-to-video stodge, progressing inexorably to a depressing climax. The book was better.
