Coming soon: Mail Online .… the TV show?

World-beating website – the scourge of celebrities on their way to the gym or stepping out of cars – has been approached by US TV producers. What on earth would its show look like?

Not content with the supreme domination of our mobile and desktop screens with its “sidebar of shame”, Mail Online could soon get a whole new medium, publisher Martin Clarke tells the Wall Street Journal.

Clarke said the Mail’s digital incarnation had been approached by several producers about developing a show for US TV based on its wildly successful web formula – “hoovering up the internet and vomiting it back out”, as one staffer tells the WSJ – in the mould of Entertainment Tonight or Access Hollywood.

“We haven’t settled on anything, but we are open to the possibility,” the, ahem … “hard-charging Fleet Street veteran” told the Journal.

Way back when, Charlie Brooker lampooned the title’s print incarnation in Daily Mail Island, a reality TV show in which people are deposited on an island with the paper the only media they have access too, leading to them taking progressively more irrational and brutal courses of action.

This became a recurring sketch in the 2001 E4 spin-off of Brooker’s TVGoHome spoof TV listings website, featuring among others, Catherine Tate.

Monkey fears Mail Online: the TV Show may be beyond parody.
