Telegraph Media Group has hired Malcolm Coles, the executive responsible for Trinity Mirror’s BuzzFeed-style site UsVsTh3m, as its new director of digital media.

Coles will replace Ben Clissitt, who is leaving Telegraph Media Group at the end of the year to join Bloomberg.

He is joining from Mirror Online where he is digital director and will have responsibility for all TMG’s digital media activity.

Coles’ departure from Trinity Mirror comes months after the appointment of Pete Picton, Mail Online’s deputy publisher for three years, as editorial director of Mirror Online.

In other management changes announced by TMG on Monday, Robert Winnett, a Telegraph deputy editor, takes charge of online and print news for the title.

Allister Heath, another deputy editor, will oversee business coverage – including personal finance – technology and property.

Weekend editor Ian MacGregor takes on additional responsibility as director, leisure, in charge of travel, arts and entertainment, cars, along with online channels dedicated to food and drink, gardening, interiors, health and wellbeing and puzzles.

Kate Day, director of digital content, is promoted to director of future media.

TMG is also recruiting a director of lifestyle, overseeing its magazines, features, luxury and beauty coverage.

Chris Evans, Daily Telegraph editor and director of content, said: “These six people will form the senior editorial team who will oversee our transformation into a digital-first media newsroom that also produces a fantastic newspaper. I am delighted that Malcolm is joining our team. These key appointments will ensure that our content continues to lead the field; both in paper and online.”
