Crashingly loud and smugly violent, Faster is a petrolhead revenge thriller starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a getaway driver who took the rap for a bungled bank robbery. Now he's out of jail – and back at the wheel of his 1971 Chevy Malibu SS, roaring around looking for payback against the guys who set him up and murdered his adored brother. Billy Bob Thornton and Carla Gugino are the cops on his trail and British newcomer Oliver Jackson-Cohen is the pretty boy hitman and Jude-Law-soundalike hired by the villains to take Johnson down. The film is chiefly notable for a quite extraordinary expository speech from Tom Berenger at the very beginning, playing the prison warden; he gives Johnson a pep talk before letting him out on the streets. Under the guise of brooding over his prison career, he laboriously tells the audience precisely what we are supposed to be thinking about Johnson's dynamic character: "You were a survivor … you didn't go lookin' for trouble, but when it came – you didn't back down." Hell, no! Perhaps they brought in Mr Berenger to do this speech at the original pitch meeting. Director George Tillman Jr keeps revving it up, but this just gets tangled and boring.
