Peter Bradshaw: Unusual action-thriller about a US president on the receiving end of an assassination attempt

William Hurt stars in this unusual action-thriller about a US president on the receiving end of an assassination attempt while at an international summit in Spain. The gimmick is that the movie is composed of the same chaotic 11-minute period being shown over and over from the vantage points of different people, including a secret service agent (Dennis Quaid), a tourist (Forest Whitaker) and a TV producer (Sigourney Weaver). Nobody's point of view contradicts anyone else's; the idea is not to challenge objective reality in the manner of Rashomon. There is a bit of a Groundhog Day feel before the surprises kick in, but this is serviceable entertainment, and how refreshing to see a commercial movie that tries something structurally and procedurally different.
