As Sandy flooded cities, tore away beach towns and put millions of households out of power Monday, thousands of people took a few seconds to lean outside and snap a picture.

For those who were fortunate enough to be wired in during Sandy, the storm's story was told on social media. On Instagram, users were uploading 10 photos about the hurricane per second to the photo sharing service. But Twitter, Flickr and Facebook all played a part for people who were trying to document the destruction.
