Teen movies: a 16-year-old’s five best

The official Guardian list of the top 10 teen movies was published last year. But with an average age of 104 among our critics, we thought we’d let a genuine 16-year-old have a go too

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008)

With a sympathetic but slightly stalkerish group of pals, the hottest guy in town in her sights and parents embarrassing her at every turn, the heroine of Gurinder Chadha’s comedy has a life that’s tragic reality for most teenage girls. The everyday storyline and hilarious mishaps in this movie make it so relatable.

Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)

The main attraction of this movie probably has to be Ryan Gosling’s major shirtless scene about halfway through. But if we needed anything to keep us watching until then, this is a movie packed full of hilariously awkward moments and a star-studded cast. What more could you want? (Maybe just one more shirtless Ryan Gosling scene?)

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

A loveable classic, telling a simple love story. Lizzie Bennett is the perfect role model for teens, an independent and strong-willed woman. The soothing soundtrack is the cherry on top.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Slightly more action-packed then its predecessors, this latest edition of the Spiderman movies is definitely the best. Action, science, drama and love – they combine to make a movie to suit almost any taste. Andrew Garfield’s presence also helps.

Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls is about cliques and fitting in. It’s funny because it takes a normal situation to extremes. Tina Fey steals the show as the maths teacher.
