White Settlers review – delivers topical thrills but lacks depth

Timeliness is the main virtue of this decent but formulaic holiday-home horror set in the Scottish Borders, writes Anna Smith

Nicknamed the "Scottish referendum horror", this is a timely thriller set in the Scottish Borders. An English couple (Pollyanna McIntosh and Lee Williams) snap up a remote home but soon find things going bump in the night. It seems they are far from welcome, and battle to escape their aggressors. Aside from a original ending, the storyline is formulaic and single-minded, but a reasonably authentic set-up gives us a couple to root for. The intruders remain disappointingly faceless: it doesn't address the root of the violence with more than a few cursory lines. Nevertheless, it's a decent watch for the genre, with suspense and a promising turn from rising star McIntosh.
