Thorne Travel: a lesson in viral marketing from North Ayrshire

A humour-rich YouTube video by a small Scottish travel agency has taken flight on the internet

Thorne Travel’s 2014 video has it all – from special effects to a jaunty soundtrack.

A promotional video for a small Scottish travel agency featuring special effects, a Swedish House Mafia soundtrack and a flash-mob dance went viral on Friday.

The advert, made by Thorne Travel, from Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, had racked up more than 35,000 views on YouTube by early Friday evening, helped along by a tweet by Father Ted creator Graham Linehan.

The video’s many highlights include a ship’s captain in an oversized jacket, an incongruous backflip on to the pavement, and a guest appearance from Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Shona Thorne, the owner of Thorne Travel, told Travel Trade Gazette that she sees the ad not just as a promotion for her company but also for Kilwinning.

“We’re known locally as the pink ladies, because of our pink uniforms,” she told TTG Digital. “Our customers used to say, if people could just see you, they’d know how different you are.”

“It started off as a wee small video, but now it’s an all-singing, all-dancing proper advert, about us, our town and how it has supported us,” she said.
